In a move intended to send out a strong message to private schools in the capital, the Education Department has issued showcause notices to takeover two branches of Maxfort School at Rohini and Pitampura.

Citing violations by the schools under the Delhi School Education Act and Rules, the notice asked them to respond within 15 days as to why the department shouldn’t “take over their management”.

However, school authorities have called the order “illegal and against the principle of natural justice”. It also claims that the government is “playing into the hands of vested interests and is politicising the issue by making the school a scapegoat”.

Education minister Manish Sisodia said, “We’ve taken a tough decision to stop private schools from having their own way. We have issued showcause notices for the takeover of two branches of Maxfort. We are preparing to take over Maxfort Rohini and Pitampura after complaints from parents and teachers. Violations in EWS admissions at both branches, financial irregularities and fake records of teachers have come to light.”

The government had also approached the Economic Offences Wing of police, asking it to investigate the complaints of alleged illegal transactions of over Rs 50 crore with fake companies and individuals by the two branches.

Following complaints of charging of donation and increased fee from parents, and withholding results of the students over non-payment of fees, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has also directed the two branches to refund the amount and release the result.

School authorities claimed a high court order has already given the schools a clean chit and that they have not committed any fraud.

“The Directorate stated in court that it couldn’t find any instance of wrongdoing. As far as EWS admissions are concerned, we haven’t even been asked to represent ourselves. What has happened today is illegal and against the principle of natural justice. We are the same as others, there is nothing special about us,” said a senior official from the school.
