With police making little headway into the the attack on Ansar Alam,an Executive Engineer with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD),the civic administration wants the case to be handed over to the Crime Branch.

The decision was taken after MCD engineers,on the second day of their indefinite protest, alleged that the police were hand-in-glove with the builder mafia. “We met the engineers who were protesting against the attack on Alam. They informed us that the police are not supporting them in any way. They also alleged that the police are not interested in investigating the case. So we have decided that the Crime Branch should probe the case instead,” said Additional Commissioner (Engineering) Manish Gupta.

Meanwhile, the MCD is pressing for serious charges against those who attacked Alam on Tuesday. “It is very clear that the culprits attacked Alam with the intention of killing him. However,Additional DCP (Central) Aslam Khan said the police are probing the case by questioning the staff. “Right now,we are clueless. We don’t have CCTV grabs as the incident occurred in the evening and the culprits attacked from the rear. But we are probing the case, taking note of a recent incident where Alam stalled construction of unauthorised structures. The MCD staff is also being questioned.”

Alam was shifted to the Apollo Hospital on Friday evening. “Alam’s condition worsened by evening. He was complaining of dizziness. So,the association transferred him to Apollo,” said Feroz Muzaffar,Joint Secretary of the MCD Engineers’ Association.

Despite requests from the civic administration, the engineers’ association has refused to call off its protest. “We are not going to call off the strike. Today, nobody came to listen to our grievances. Only Additional Commissioner Manish Gupta visited us. We aren’t asking for anything unreasonable. We are demanding justice for Alam and protection for the staff,” Muzaffar said.
