West Bengals Priyanka Banerjee and Railways S Rabikumar Singh both got lucky as the Federation Cup Commonwealth Games test event for swimming got underway at the newly-inaugurated Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Swimming Complex on Tuesday. Banerjees right leg got stuck in a loose drainage cover next to pool just before she was to compete in the 1m spring board event. She was treated for minor injuries.
Singh got bruises on his right shin after a similar mishap. But unlike Banerjee,he shook off the freak accident and went on to win the gold medal in 1m spring board for men.

Competition manager Kamlesh Nanavati confirmed the incident, saying Banerjee suffered a cut on her leg.
But these werent the only problems on Day One. The high board event was cancelled on Tuesday as the diving platforms werent ready. Divers were told that only 1m spring board event will be held.
Since international specifications require the surface on the platforms to be rough, the technical delegates including FINA vice-president Sam Ramswamy deemed it not fit for competition.
We always knew that the platform wouldnt be ready for the competition. We held a meeting two days ago, where the engineers had insisted that itll be ready. But it wasnt the case so we had to do away with the event at the last moment, Nanavati added.
Besides, one of the three 3m boards will not be used since it wasnt up to the mark. Well hold on the 3m event only from two boards. Changing rooms are not up to the standards, washrooms are dirty. If things remain like this,no foreigner will come here Nanavati said.
As per a young diver, the diving platform 10m and 7m are dangerously close to each other. Normally they arent this close. Itll be difficult for synchronised diving events to take place as chances are that someone can get hit by the 7m platform, she said on condition of anonymity.
