NDMC to put softer lights in colony parks

The New Delhi Municipal Council has decided to put up ‘soft’ lights in parks of its colonies after getting complaints that strong light filters into the houses and disturbs sleep.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to put up ‘soft’ lights in parks of its colonies after getting complaints that strong light filters into the houses and disturbs sleep. And if everything goes as per plan,Sarojini Nagar residents will be the first to sleep better.

According to officials from the civic agency,238 new poles will be put up in 251 small parks in the South Delhi colony. The move comes after the NDMC received complaints from Sarojini Nagar residents about lack of proper lighting in the small,30×30 meter parks around which houses are built in the area.

short article insert The proposal to put in new lights that are soft and energy-efficient was raised in the NDMC meeting last month. While the Council approved the Bill, the members also decided that introduction of the new lights should not be restricted to just one colony.

“We decided that since softer lights are being put up in Sarojini Nagar,we should extend it elsewhere also,” NDMC member Mukesh Bhatt said.

After work starts in Sarojini Nagar, other areas like Netaji Nagar,Chanakyapuri and Moti Bagh will also get new lights in the colony parks.

“We are shifting to CFL because they are energy-efficient,” another NDMC member said. “They will be 66-watt bulbs,so that residents have sound sleep.”

Sarojini Nagar is lit by 150-watt sodium bulbs that give a very strong light due to their reflective tendencies; they also consume more energy.

The pilot project at Sarojini Nagar will be carried out at a cost of more than Rs 1 crore, according to an NDMC official. The existing light poles will also be replaced.

Since it is a residential area with relatively less traffic, the civic body believes keeping the light soft will not hamper traffic movement within the colony, the official said.

In order to reuse light,150-watt fittings will be installed in Naoroji Nagar main road, which have 70-watt sodium fittings at present and need to be upgraded.

“The Council has already approved the scheme and work will begin shortly,” the official said.
