Varun Sood knows how to get wickets even when he fails to get sharp turn from the wicket. His simple formula consists of shifting to the edge of the crease and angling it in to the batsman at a slightly faster speed. Most batsmen fail to pick the subtlety and consciously play him as if he had bowled yet another left arm spinner. Their confidence turns into dismay too late as they realise it is his arm ball that has just rapped them on their pads. In his match against Uttar Pradesh which ended on Tuesday,Sood returned with figures of 6/111,out of which three fell to the arm ball. With the Palam wicket offering next to nothing,Sood believes that it is his armer that has been helping him breaking crucial partnerships bowling out the UP U-22 side and giving Delhi the crucial first innings lead.
His expression executing it well is an understatement considering he and fellow left armer Manan Sharma together ran through the entire UP outfit in what can be termed the spin departments triumph. It is difficult for spinners to run through the entire side as medium pacers provide you with initial support. But when the medium pacers run out of steam, the responsibility eventually falls on our shoulders, Sood says.
Their bowling partnership was a marathon effort with both combining for more than 100 overs. Although Manan relied mostly on the traditional left arm spin to finish with four wickets,Sood experimented with his deliveries to finish with six.
While Sood utilises the arm ball extensively, picking up according to his own calculation half the 12 wickets he has this season with it,the delivery resulted in just a single wicket in his first match against Mumbai where he got four wickets in all. You dont need to use the armer often in Mumbai. On those wickets the ball itself does a lot ,so it is better to be consistent on line. But in Delhi,it is undoubtedly a rewarding delivery, he says.
