Nurseries can no longer play with rules

No other commercial activities like computer centres or coaching classes will be permitted where playschools are operational.

To curb the problem of “mushrooming playschools” across the capital, Delhi government is working on regulating them and bringing them under its Education Department.

While the minimum plot size will be 200 sqm for regular areas, in rehabilitation colonies, regularised unauthorised colonies, the Walled City and urbanised villages, such schools should have at least 75 sqm space. This is a requirements of the Delhi Masterplan as well.

Opening of schools in Lutyens bungalow zone, Civil Lines bungalow zone, buildings listed by heritage conservation committee and government housing and staff housing of public and private agencies will no longer be allowed.

According to regulations, no other commercial activities like computer centres or coaching classes will be permitted where playschools are operational. The owner of the school will have to obtain permission from the Directorate of Education and be dictated by the Delhi School education Act, making it possible for the education director to derecognise schools which don’t comply with its rules.

Stating that it was already monitoring playschools running on land allotted by government agencies, the Education department stated in an affidavit filed before the Delhi High Court that it will now monitor all such institutions running on private land as well, to have “parity” in matters relating to such institutions.
