Nursery classes to begin on April 15

In a major relief to parents, the Delhi High Court had on Thursday lifted its stay on nursery admission.

Nursery classes in the capital will begin on April 15. Following the High Court order on Thursday, the Directorate of Education has issued new guidelines instructing schools to start the admission process immediately and begin classes by April 15.

“The schools shall start the admission process immediately keeping in view the high court directions and complete the admission process in respect of open seats, staff quota, girl’s quota and EWS & Disadvantaged group quota by April 9, 2014.  The schools may start classes for the admitted students by April 15, 2014,” reads the order issued by the Directorate of Education.

Considering the paucity of working days available with schools to complete the process, the department has also allowed schools to “continue the admission process on holidays as well”.

IT also instruct the schools “to not wait for the wait-listed candidates for admission till the next date of hearing by the High Court and further directions” in the regard.

A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice B D Ahmed, which heard two separate petitions for almost the whole day, passed an interim order stating that applicants, who had scored 70 points under the neighbourhood criteria and were selected in the first draw of lots, should be given admission.

It had  however, clarified that children, who emerged winners in the draw of lots in more than one school, would have to choose one school and relinquish the other on or before April 9, failing which they will lose the right to admission in any school.

Based on the court’s orders, the directorate has also instructed schools to not conduct any further draws till next date of hearing.

“Any subsequent or second draw of lots for 70 point candidates conducted after notification dated February 27, 2014, stays “on hold” till next hearing by the High Court, which is scheduled on April 16, 2014. Also, no further draws for 70 points is to be conducted until the date of next hearing,” the guidelines said.
