In a recent case of road rage in Gurgaon,a personal security guard of a student of GD Goenka School fired at an Indica driver. The incident pointed to the fact how such cases involving security guards and officers are on the rise. Such outbursts are blamed on long duty hours and the increasing stress levels of security personnel. Taking view of the scenario,24 Secure,a leading security agency, organised a workshop on anger management for its security officers on Thursday.

“Of late, there have been many instances when security officers have got into situations that have gone out of hand. We feel it is an important issue that must be addressed,” said Sharmistha Debnath, communications head of the agency.

Psychiatrist Dr Rahul Chandok addressed the security officers on techniques to effectively handle difficult and stressful situations. Many officers cited real-life examples of situations in which they found it hard to control their anger. Dr Chandok said the best way to deal with such situations where these officers are securing their clients or handling crowds was to avoid a confrontation and have proper planning. He advised the officers to stay away from alcohol while accompanying clients to a party or a get-together.

According to Dr Chandok, the one basic thing that every security officer must always keep in mind is that they should not be arrogant. “Often, because you are from this background, you believe that you can dominate and teach anyone a lesson. Never inculcate such an attitude. You are only supposed to protect and defend,” he said.

Answering to queries about the Gurgaon incident,Dr Chandok said: “It is pretty clear that shooting wasn’t necessary. It was more about the so-called ‘image’ and ‘reputation’ of the officer and nothing else.”

About various steps that an individual can take to control anger,Chandok mentioned corrective measures like right eating and sleeping habits, proper work and home environment, yoga and meditation. “If none of this works, the individual should immediately seek psychiatric aid,” he added.
