As the world celebrates the success of Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra locked horns over the movie in the Assembly on Wednesday. After Dikshit commended India’s contribution to the multiple Oscar-winning film and congratulated A R Rahman for winning two Oscars,Malhotra said instead of celebrating the success of the movie, the government should be ashamed of the portrayal of Indian slums by a foreign director.

“First of all,the name ‘slumdog’ is objectionable,” Malhotra said. “We should realise that there are about 25 lakh slum-dwellers in the Capital, and the government has not been able to do anything for them.”

Dikshit’s retaliation was measured: “That is your personal opinion; Rahman’s achievement is commendable.”
