The 25-year-old teacher, who was in a critical condition after she was shot by an army sepoy last Thursday, died on Sunday morning in Gurgaon. The accused, 26-year-old Manjit Singh, was arrested last Friday. Police said the charge of murder (Section 302 of the IPC) will now be added to the case. The body was handed over to the family after an autopsy.
Singh shot the woman last Thursday when she was waiting for the school bus at Bilaspur Chowk. She received two bullet injuries in the head and in her chest. Singh was arrested from Rewari last Friday while he was trying to flee to his relative’s house in Bawal.
The accused allegedly told police that he shot the woman as she had refused to continue their relationship after he got married.
Refuting claims of a ‘relationship’ between the woman and the accused, her family had claimed that he had been harassing her via phone calls.
Meanwhile, police said her family members had contacted a local NGO to donate her organs but later refused due to the pressure from villagers.
Dr Deepak Mathur, forensic expert at Gurgaon’s Civil hospital, said, “I had received a call from an NGO, saying that the family had agreed to donate her eyes, liver, kidney and heart. But within an hour the family declined to do so. They had discussed the move with other villagers who refused to let them make the donation.”
The accused has been remanded to two days police custody and will be produced in a city court on Monday. ACP (Crime) Rajesh Kumar said, “We received information from the hospital around 1.30 pm about the death.”
