When director Girish Malik was in the US,he heard the music Sonu Niigaam had created with Janet Jackson apart from his other tunes. This exposure prompted Malik to rope in the singer to compose music for his debut film Jal a National Film Development Corporation project based on water scarcity in the Rann of Kuchh that premiered at the Busan International Film Festival this month.
There is enough virginity in the thought that makes the sound of Jal fresh and fluid. Also Girish trusted me with this and let me have a free reign, says Niigaam, who has teamed with Kolkata-based percussionist Bickram Ghosh to create music for the film.
After working tirelessly for 22 years,Niigaam who composed for Chanda Ki Doli,an album he had done some years ago believes that it is the idea of creative satisfaction and growth that has turned him into a composer. One has to understand the thought process of the director and the film to create music, says Niigaam, who has also worked on the background score for the three-track film, besides penning the lyrics for the same along with Ghosh.
While the title track blends ragas of Marwa and Puriya and combines it with the Armenian duduk in Jal de,a song by Shubha Mudgal; another track features Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
Niigaams next project will be the
title track of Anil Sharmas Sunny
Deol-Amrita Rao starrer,Singh Saab The Great.
