Sushil to return to ring but only after marriage

Champion wrestler Sushil Kumar is a man of few words. A day after being conferred with the Padma Shri award,Kumar said he was grateful for bestowing him with the prestigious award. “I’m very happy and grateful for this honour. Sach me bahut khushi ho rahi hai,” he told Sportline on Wednesday.

Out of competition since the 2010 Commonwealth Games because of a shoulder injury,the Najafgarh grappler is still a month away from active participation. He is getting married in February and is targeting the month of March to make a comeback to competitive bouts. This effectively rules him out for the upcoming Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Cup,a FILA-approved prize money tournament to be held from February 9 in Jullundur.

Having picked up the injury during his gold-winning feat at the 2010 World Championships in Moscow,the 27-year-old played through pain at the Delhi Games in October,but then had to rule himself out of the Asian Games in Guangzhou in order to recuperate. “I won the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games gold medals with a taped shoulder. I had no choice but to participate in these tournaments because they were important events. But after that I ran the risk of aggravating the injury so I had to take time off. I was picking up knocks in the shoulder,while practicing and during the bouts so the doctor told me to stop and rest before I make it worse,” he said.

For now though the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna winner,is looking forward to his impending marriage to Savi — daughter of his long-time mentor and guru Satpal. “It’s a two-day affair (February 17-18),” the shy wrestler divulged,admitting that he’s looking forward to his married life,he said: “I will know about the changes after I get married.”
