The Parsi way of Life

This is perhaps the first such exhibition where you can see Parsi culture at a glance.

This is perhaps the first such exhibition where you can see Parsi culture at a glance. Organised by the Parzor Foundation,in collaboration with Crafts Revival Trust, the Parsi Panorama displays Parsi crafts — both textiles and embroidery — food, furniture and jewellery.

One of the most interesting aspects of the ware on display is the various styles of Gara, traditional Parsi embroidery on lightweight silk saris that has intricate needlework with birds, butterflies, bats, the sacred fungus, bamboo, cranes, deers and flowers, which have a spiritual meaning or a historical association.

This embroidery is an amalgamation of Indian,Chinese and Central Asian traditions. The khaka stitch is so fine that women who do the needlework start suffering from failing eyesight, which has given it the name of the forbidden stitch. Also on view are jhablas (tunics) that children wear for the Navjot (religious initiation) ceremony. These tunics have korolia (spider) design as spiders are considered saviours in the Parsi mythology.
