Tongas ,an intrinsic part of the Delhis cultural heritage,may have vanished from city roads,but students of Shri Ram School,Moulsari Campus,have taken it upon themselves to ensure proper rehabilitation for the horses as well as their owners.
Around 20 Incandescents (as they like to call themselves),who are part of the Class XII leadership programme in the school,claim to have taken up the tongawallah cause. On Saturday morning,they held a variety of programmes including bake sales and a musical session to raise funds in this regard. In the forefront was Arnav Adhikari,president of the leadership club,who let loose a tune or two to entertain everybody who had come to attend.
From the money collected through the fund raiser,these students plan to purchase fodder and medicines for horses,besides warm clothing for tongawallahs.
We are also planning to approach corporates for funding. We want to protect and preserve an intrinsic part of Delhis culture. As part of the leadership programme,other schools took up projects related to illiteracy and poverty. But we took up this cause because nobody is fighting for the rights of the tongawallahs and their animals, said Manik Papneja. The students have also come up with a proposal for using the tongas for tourism.
If they let these tongas ply in the vicinity of historical sites,it will be good for tourism too, said Ishita Jain. The teacher heading the leadership group of Class XII in Shri Ram School,Mrinalini Rautela Pahwa,said the next batch of students will also take up the same cause.
Meanwhile,MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said: The proposal to use buggies for tourism,and ceremonial purpose has received in-principle approval. We are trying to implement the proposal now.
