An inspector of the Uttar Pradesh Police Special Task Force (STF) died Wednesday, two days after he was shot at by the members of the Mustafa Kagga gang in an encounter late Monday in the Shamli district.
Sunil Kumar was hit by three bullets in his abdomen during the encounter that occurred between 11 pm and 11.30 pm on Bidoli-Chausana Road in the Jhinjhana area Monday. The inspector died while undergoing treatment at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon.
“He was one of the bravest in the team. He died in the line of duty. He will keep encouraging us,” said Amitabh Yash, Additional Director General of Police, UP STF, Law and Order.
In the encounter, the STF team led by Kumar gunned down four members of the Mustafa Kagga gang, including the mastermind Arshad, who carried Rs 1 lakh bounty on his head, and his three associates, Manjeet Dahiya, Satish and an unidentified individual.
The police said the gang had been actively involved in crimes like robberies, dacoities, and murders in Western Uttar Pradesh districts. They said they had been tracking the gang for the last few months, and Arshad became active again after coming out of jail in June last year. “He became active in crimes following which the reward against him went up to Rs 1 lakh,” Yash said.
