A local court on Wednesday granted bail to Delhi BJP President Vijender Gupta and six other party leaders in an alleged case of rioting during a protest here last year.
Metropolitan Magistrate Jasjeet Kaur granted bail to Gupta on his furnishing a personal bond of Rs 25,000. Besides Gupta, the court granted bail to Delhi BJP leaders Pawan Sharma,Pravesh Verma,R P Singh,Rajeshwar Nagpal,Mahender Gupta and Shikha Rai. The leaders were accused of rioting, unlawful assembly, obstructing public servants in discharge of their official duty and causing hurt to public servants during a protest march near Jantar Mantar.
According to the Delhi Police,Gupta and the others had assembled at Jantar Mantar on February 24 last year with around 1,500 party members,to protest against price rise, corruption and other issues. During the protest, they were asked by the police not to enter Parliament Street where another protest was going on,but the protesters tried to remove the barricades and also damaged public property, the FIR said.
The FIR alleged that the BJP leaders indulged in a violent protest,in which police personnel and other persons were injured.
However, the BJP leaders,in their bail pleas, said they had been falsely implicated in the case, and their march was a peaceful procession under strict observation of the senior office bearers of the state BJP. The court has fixed the case for further hearing on May 29.
