Development Minister Gopal Rai inspected a Yamuna ghat in north Delhi on Friday and took stock of preparations for Chhath Puja. The government said 565 ghats are being set up along the banks of the river for Chhath Puja — a major festival celebrated by people from Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
Rai, accompanied by senior officers of the irrigation and flood control department, DJB and revenue department, inspected Kudesia Ghat at Kashmere Gate.
“Of 565 ghats, 50 pucca ghats have been constructed for Chhath Puja. The minister directed the departments concerned to start providing facilities such as tents at all ghats from tomorrow,” a senior government official said.
The official said a monitoring committee has been constituted to look after preparations. Delhi has about 40 lakh ‘Poorvanchali’ voters, hailing from east UP, Bihar and Jharkhand, who play a key role in elections. The AAP government made a special financial provision in the 2017-18 budget to set up Chhath ghats across the city.
