Calling the BJP the “only real competition” in the Lok Sabha elections, Gurgaon AAP candidate Yogendra Yadav said he will address a rally in Mewat on Thursday, in response to the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s rally in Gurgaon the same day.
Yadav also challenged the BJP’s Gurgaon candidate Rao Inderjit Singh to a debate on Gurgaon’s issues at “a public forum of his choice”. The rally is scheduled to begin at 1 pm on Thursday.
Unveiling the party’s manifesto for Gurgaon parliamentary constituency on Wednesday, Yadav said Modi was indeed “an issue among the masses in Mewat”, a district with a Muslim majority.
“The rally will be held at Ghasera village in Mewat, a place Mahatma Gandhi had visited in 1947 to reassure the members of the minority community, who were fleeing to Pakistan for fear of their lives. The community stayed back after the Mahatma intervened,” Yadav said.
In its manifesto, the AAP has mentioned that land and liquor mafia, lack of safety of women and lack of coordination among multiple government agencies were some of the issues plaguing Gurgaon.
“The constituency can largely be divided into three zones, each with its own set of problems — urban Gurgaon, backward regions such as Rewari and districts such as Mewat, which are not only backward, but also culturally very different,” Yadav said.
“For instance, take the case of education. Urban Gurgaon, in spite being a satellite town to Delhi, has not been able to become an educational hub. Rewari has some schools, but no universities. Mewat does not even have a school for girls,” he said.
Yadav also said Gurgaon was severely lacking in infrastructure, despite its burgeoning population. “There are no proper roads, health facilities or drinking water facilities here. Also, there are multiple agencies looking into all these issues. The lack of coordination has led to to utter mis-governance. We will create a democratically elected nodal agency to take care of this,” Yadav said.
