Delhi University’s Hansraj College will put together its most elaborate extra-curricular activities (ECA ) trials this year with 2,100 candidates applying for a mere eight ECA seats available in the college,Principal Dr V K Kawatra said on Wednesday.

“This is the highest number of applications we have received so far under this quota and we are going to have a real tough time conducting trials this year. Most of the students are high scorers with more than 90 per cent marks who might miss the cut-offs of Hansraj by a few points. Some have submitted elaborate applications — in photography, for example, applicants have submitted entire albums of their photographs,” the principal said.

Of the 2,000-plus candidates who are striving to make it to the college’s eight seats, about 900 will be shortlisted and trails will be held after June 29,Dr Kawatra said. “We will have to conduct trials this year in five venues and different trials will go on simultaneously,” he said.

At other colleges which admit students to ECA seats, applications were fewer. North Campus’s Daulat Ram College has received nearly 350 applications this year, said college’s media coordinator Dr Ira Pandit.

In the South Campus,Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College said it had received nearly 400 applications.

The college’s popularity as an ECA destination can be attributed to the fact that it is the alma mater of many Bollywood celebrities, said the principal.

“We have topped all competition in choreography and dramatics this year. Many students have been picked from such competitions by directors for movies, theatre productions, etc. People like Anurag Kashyap,Shah Rukh Khan and others are our alumni and we often invite them to share their experiences with students here, all of which have led to students interested in ECA applying to Hansraj,” Dr Kawatra said.

“We are also a preferred destination for Bollywood movie shoots. Last year, two movies were shot here and two are now awaiting permission to shoot,” he said.

Most DU colleges are expected to conduct their ECA trials in the first week of July.
