This is the third student suicide in Kota this month. A National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) coaching student died by suicide on Thursday evening in Kota. This is the third student suicide in the coaching hub this month. Police were informed about the death of Abhijeet Giri, 18, hailing from Odisha, at 8.30 pm on Thursday.
Giri had been living in Kota since April 2024.
With suicides on the rise in Kota in recent years, the Rajasthan city has implemented safety measures such as anti-hanging fans in rooms of students. At least 17 coaching students died by suicide in Kota in 2024.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Lal Singh Tanwar told The Indian Express: “On Thursday night at 8.30 pm, we received information that a NEET student had died by suicide. The reason why he took the step is not known, and no suicide note was recovered from the room. The student was residing at Jain Villa Residency Hostel in Ambedkar Colony. The postmortem will be done after the family members arrive from Odisha.”
A person bringing the student’s tiffin at 8pm knocked on his door and got no answer. Subsequently, two-three other students who lived in the building broke open the door and found his body.
The time of death could not immediately be ascertained, police said, adding that the student’s afternoon tiffin was also left untouched outside the room.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Giri was good in his studies and had regularly attended his coaching classes, a police officer said.
On January 8, a 20-year-old Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) aspirant died by suicide in his PG room. He was from Madhya Pradesh and was preparing for JEE at a coaching institute since May last year.
On January 7, another JEE aspirant from Haryana was also found dead in his room in an apparent case of suicide.
