Abu Hena,the Congress MLA from Lalgola,was elected leader of Congress Legislature Party in Kolkata on Thursday. Senior Congress leaders Pranab Mukherjee,A K Antony Defence minister and AICC general secretary Shakeel Ahmed were present at the meeting where the 42 newly elected MLAs unanimously nominated Congress president Sonia Gandhi to elect their leader. Minutes later,senior Congress leaders declared Abu Hena as the CLP leader.
Hena was elected CLP leader in the last Assembly session when Manas Bhuniya,the then CLP leader,was made state Congress president. Hena,who has been representing Lalgola constituency in Murshidabad since 1991,is the son of Adbus Sattar who was the leader of CLP from 1982 till 1991 when he died.
I am very happy and grateful to Sonia Gandhi. Moreover,what makes me more happy is that my father was CLP leader for over a decade, said Hena.
Dont think CPM has been wiped out
Congress leader A K Antony while congratulating party MLAs cautioned them from being complacent saying,Dont think that the CPM has been wiped out. The former CM of Kerala said that he was happy to see his party winning more seats in Bengal (42) than in his home state (38).
