CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty, on Friday, pointed out that investors who deposited money in the infamous Saradha chit fund, that collapsed in 2013, have still not received their money, even after 10 years of the scam.

The Saradha Group of companies had allegedly cheated thousands of depositors, promising abnormally high returns on investments in its illegal schemes.

Addressing a press conference, Chakraborty said, “Since 2013, we have started this agitation, seeking justice for investors who trusted the Chief Minister and invested in companies, but never received their money back. Many people joined us, they want their money back and perpetrators to face punishment. Ten years have passed, under the command of court it is found out that the biggest beneficiary is a member of Trinamool Congress, but still, no action has been taken.”

He, further, stated, “The state government announced to allocate 500 crore rupees for the Justice Shyamal Sen Commission in order to refund the money of Saradha depositors. Only 149 crore rupees were given to the depositors, and 213 crore rupees were not paid. When the Justice Shyamal Sen Commission started taking steps to resolve the issue, the state government shut down the Commission leaving all other depositors, including those related with Saradha, in the dark.”

Chakraborty, the CPI(M) candidate from the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency, also stated that, “The state and the Centre were not only completely indifferent, but also tried their best to block the way of people’s refund. Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency is a breeding ground for illegal business of chit fund companies and this time I’m contesting from Dum Dum, to protect the interests of the defrauded depositors.”
