Electric fault disrupts train services in Howrah

Thousands of railway passengers were badly hit on Tuesday as train services on Bardhaman-Asansol section of Howrah division in Eastern Railways remained disrupted.

Thousands of railway passengers were badly hit on Tuesday as train services on Bardhaman-Asansol section of Howrah division in Eastern Railways remained disrupted for nearly eight hours after an overhead electrical mast was damaged on the section late Monday night.

The incident happened between Talit and Khana stations,118 km from Howrah. The Howrah-Delhi Grand line runs through this section and is one of the busiest sections of Eastern Railway.

“Electric poles and overhead wires fell on the tracks disrupting the entire route from Howrah- Dhanbad. It could have been a major disaster had the wires fallen on a moving train. A high-level departmental enquiry into the incident has already been ordered,” said a senior Railway official.

Many trains were stopped at Asansol,Durgapur and other stations. At least 12 trains were diverted through South Eastern Railway routes and Bandel- Azimganj- Katwa route. Ten trains including Dhanbad-Howrah Coalfield Express,Agneevina Express and Shantiniketan Express were cancelled.

Repair work was taken up immediately and emergency services were pressed into service.

Engineers’ teams were dispatched from Howrah,Asansol,Burdwan and other nearby stations.

Varun Bharthuar,General Manager,Eastern Railways and other senior railway officers also reached the spot within hours and supervised the repair work. Railway officials said restoration work was done at war-footing level.

Train services resumed on Burdwan-Asansol section at 10 am in a phased manner.
