Fresh shadow over Nayachar project,PIL seeks stay

A fisherman from Nayachar has filed a PIL in the Calcutta High Court seeking a stay on the proposed power plant in the island.

A fisherman from Nayachar has filed a PIL in the Calcutta High Court seeking a stay on the proposed power plant in the island.

In his petition,Bansi Badan Jana has contended that the proposed power plant would not only damage environment but would also lead to the eviction of a large number of fishermen from the area.

The Trinamool Congress-led government had last year announced that Universal Crescent Company,a private firm,would set up power plant at Nayachar.

Earlier,the Left Front government had announced setting up of a chemical hub there in 2007 but it was later scrapped.

The petition also questions changing the status of the island from Costal Regulatory Zone-1 to Coastal Regulatory Zone-3 category in January 2009.

After going through the petition,the Division Bench headed by Chief Justice Jaynarayan Patel wanted to know from the petitioner,how did he collect the government’s documents annexed to the petition.

The Bench also asked him to disclose the source of the documents by filing an supplementary affidavit.

During the hearing,the counsel of the West Bengal Pollution Control Board said the union environment and forest ministry is yet give its nod for setting up of the power plant at Nayachar.

The case will come for hearing next week.
