The West Bengal government will soon take up repair and maintainance work of poet Nazrul Islams ancestral house at Churulia in Burdwan district,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday.
I went to Churulia along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee who was the then Prime Minister. The house is not well maintained. Repair and maintenance of the house will be taken up soon, Banerjee said in a function at the state secretariat to observe the poets death anniversary.
Banerjee said her government will observe Nazrul’s birth anniversary on May 26 in a befitting manner.
This will be our government’s first commemoration of his birthday. We will do so in a befitting manner through the Information and Cultural Affairs department involving schools, colleges,NGOs and clubs, just as we are doing to commemorate the sesquecentnnial of Rabindranath (Tagore), she said. Describing Nazrul as a poet of equality and communal harmony who also inspired the freedom movement,Banerjee regretted that not much research had been done on the poet who spent his last days in Bangladesh. Banerjee said her government has set up a Nazrul Academy under the chairmanship of poet Joy Goswami to encourage research into his life and thoughts. This initiative will also help the younger generation to discover the poet and his work.
During the function, the Chief Minister quoted at random from Nazrul’s poems and joined the chorus in singing his songs with the poet’s grand daughter Kalyani Kazi and eminent singer and Trinamool Congress MLA Anup Ghosal.
