Maoist leader involved in Sankrail kidnapping held
Jhargram: Top Maoist leader Ranjan Munda,who was active in West Bengal,Jharkhand and Orissa,and another squad leader were arrested by the joint forces from West Midnapore district on Friday. Munda was involved in the kidnapping of Sankrail Police Station Officer-in-Charge Atindranathnath Dutta in October 2009 and also in the Nayagram killings,said police. He was arrested from Chunghati forest,around 8 km from the Orrissa border. Munda and Jayanta,Maoist squad leaders,did not offer resistance when they were arrested,said police. Some other Maoists,who were present at the spot,managed to flee,they added. An AK-47 rifle,an INSAS rifle,a pistol and 150 cartridges were seized from them.
Minor raped while returning from school
Burdwan: A minor girl was allegedly raped by a youth while she was returning from school in Islampur area of Burdwan district on Thursday. After being allegedly raped,the girl,a student of Class VI,returned to her school and fainted after reaching the headmasters room. On regaining consciousness,she told the school staff that she was raped by a young man whom she couldnt recognise,police said. A complaint has been lodged in this regard while the girl has been sent to Katwa hospital for medical check-up.
Tah murder case: HC grants bail to two
Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday granted bail to Tapash Samanta and Nabakumar Roy,the two accused in the killing of former CPM MLA Pratip Tah in Burdwan in February. Tah was killed in a mob attack and police later arrested 11 persons,including Samanta and Roy. The CID,which is probing the case,has already filed a chargesheet in the case.

Kolkata: A meeting of the Trinamool Congress Parliamentary Party has been convened in New Delhi on August 6 to finalise party’s stand on the vice-presidential election slated for the day after. Child trafficking rampant in N Bengal
Kolkata: With a number of tea gardens in Jalpaiguri closed or reported to be sick,hundreds of children whose parents worked there,are being trafficked each year,a report said. Highlighting the vulnerability of children living near the defunct tea gardens of Dooars,the joint study was done by UNICEF,Save the Children and Burdwan University.
