Calling Union Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah’s rally in Kolkata on Wednesday a “flop show”, the ruling Trinamool Congress said that his party raises the issue of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) only “when elections are around “ and the issue takes a “backseat after the polls end”.
Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, state minister and TMC leader Sashi Panja said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had stated multiple times that CAA won’t be implemented in the state.
“Even though CAA was passed four years ago, it has received nine extensions since to formulate the rules. BJP raises the CAA issue during elections. The issue takes a backseat after the polls end as they will not be able to implement it ever. Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Kumar Mishra, whose son ran his car over farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri, recently said that the CAA deadline had been extended till 2024,” she added.
Panja’s remarks come after Shah in his rally alleged that Mamata Banerjee had been opposing CAA “due to her support to infiltration”. Earlier on Sunday while addressing a public meeting in North 24 Parganas district, Mishra had claimed that the Matua community in West Bengal will get citizenship soon and no one cannot deny them their right as the final draft of the CAA is likely to be ready by March 30 next year.
Panja also questioned BJP’s claims that it had received 50,000 complaints in the boxes set up during Shah’s rally on Wednesday. “It will be better if they unlock these boxes and address complaints against the Central government over withholding Bengal’s rightful dues,” she added. She further alleged that Shah was “forced” to come to Bengal because of the “factionalism” within the BJP’s Bengal unit.
Calling the rally a “super-flop event”, the ruling party also alleged that the venue for the rally was “fenced to make it appear jam-packed”.
The Trinamool said, “The event area was fenced in to make it appear jam-packed. In reality, the crowd that is seen behind the stage during Trinamool’s Martyrs’ Day rally is of the same size as the audience present at Amit Shah’s rally today. Shah talked about corruption today while standing with Suvendu Adhikari, who is one of the most corrupt leaders of Bengal. He has been named in the CBI FIR in the Narada case.” The party also claimed that BJP leaders Dilip Ghosh and Rahul Sinha, who were present on the stage during the rally, were the ones who had “posted videos of Adhikari taking bribes”.
TMC protest over pending NREGA dues
While Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a rally in Kolkata on Wednesday targeting the TMC, the ruling party’s MLA led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sat on a dharna to protest against the alleged non-payment of state’s share of funds under various welfare schemes like the MGNREGA.
While the TMC MLAs sat on a dharna, BJP MLAs led by Leader of Opposition in Assembly Suvendu Adhikari were seen walking past them and allegedly chanting slogans like “Mamata chor (thief), Trinamool chor” . The TMC MLAs then started chanting slogans against the Opposition party.
“After Amit Shah’s flop show, a group of cowards have come here to show hooliganism…BJP is uncultured,” said the CM. adding that she would urge the Assembly Speaker to take action against the BJP MLAs.
