The day when the state government will inaugurate Siliguri Police Commissionerate, which will cover police station from parts of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts, the Calcutta High Court will hear a petition challenging the formation of such Commissionerate.

A writ petition was filed by two advocates — Sujit Sarker and Saikat Chatterjee — in the High Court on Friday challenging the validity of such a commissionerate. The petition argued that a nod from the Calcutta High Court for forming the commissionerate was necessary as it covered the area of two districts. Since the High Court did not give the permission for the opening of the police commissionerate,it has to be deemed illegal, the petition stated.

The state government had earlier declared that the Siliguri Police Commissionerate would be set up on August 3 but it was deferred to August 6.

Sources in the High Court, however, said the government sought High Court’s nod for setting up the commissionerate but it was not given till Friday evening.
