On a day the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) announced the launch of an indefinite bandh in the hills from Saturday with its four demands, the Bengal government acceded to one of their demands — transfer of K L Tamta from the post of IG (north Bengal).

Tamta was shifted from his incumbent post despite severe lobbying by the Darjeeling unit of the CPM led by minister for urban development Ashok Bhattacharya for retaining the officer.

short article insert A week ago,Bhattacharya had even described the officer as “efficient who understands the sentiments of the people in the hills”. However, all these requests it seems failed to impress Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee as Tamta has been posted to IG,planning. In his place, the government has appointed Ranvir Kumar, the Special Additional Commissioner with Kolkata Police.

Reacting to Tamta’s transfer,Bhattacharya today said,“People wanted Tamta to remain there and I had conveyed the people’s sentiment to the CM.” He also slammed the GJM for “indulging in extortion” through its own police force. “The police are trying to establish the rule of law in the hills and what they are doing is absolutely right. We want the dismantling and banning of Morcha’s police GLP,” he added.

The most vocal critics of Tamta has been the GJM,which apart from demanding removal of the officer has also sought transfer of Rakesh Singh, the SDPO Kurseong who ordered lathicharge on its supporters on June 14.

The GJM blamed Tamta for alleged atrocities on Morcha supporters in the name of investigating the murder of Gorkha leader Madan Tamang. “Police atrocities have increased in the hills. They (police) are harassing Morcha supporters in the name of looking for those involved in the killing of Madan Tamang,” said GJM spokesperson Benoy Tamang. Making the harassment of GJM supporters as the reason, the outfit is demanding a CBI probe into the murder of Madan Tamang. “We are clearly saying that none of our supporters is involved in the killing of (Madan) Tamang. That is why we want a CBI inquiry into it,” added Benoy.

The fourth demand of the GJM is extended the term of B L Meena, administrator of Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council. Meena’s term expires on June 30.
