The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Information Technology (RGIIT) at Amethi, which is an extension campus of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (Allahabad) [IIIT(A),may well become the hub for research and diagnostics in healthcare using high-end information and communication technology. The latest technologies like use of robotics, stem cell therapy,micro-electronics and other such high-end avenues will be researched and discussed upon on the Amethi campus. Cooperation and collaboration at the international level is also in the offing as a large number of these technologies are new ideas which the experts in the developed countries are still working on. It is reliably learnt that the governing board of the IIIT(A),in a recent meeting at Gurgaon, approved the project that is likely to run into several hundred crores of rupees. The proposal for the project will be sent for further approval from the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Sources maintained that,if everything goes as per schedule, the process of establishing the hub on the ground may begin some time next year. In what is being seen as a precursor to the efforts for setting up research base in RGIIT,a three-day conference on use of information and communication technology in healthcare Future Technologies for Healthcare Converging Bio-medicine and Engineering - is being held from September 18 to 20 at the IIIT(A). The conference, which is a follow-up of a previous exercise in Italy last year, aims to explore the scope for widening the use of latest technology in healthcare. Apart from representations from Italy, the conference would also see participation from countries like the United States,Japan,Turkey and India.
