Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) Chancellor Zafar Sareshwala is set to meet Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to request that land be allotted to retain the university’s lone centre in UP at Lucknow.
The Lucknow centre is the the first campus to be set up outside Hyderabad by MANUU. It is set to be shifted to UP’s Sambhal district after Saudi-based NRI Nadim Tareen donated seven acres of land for it. Sareshwala, considered close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was made MANUU Chancellor in January.
The process of shifting the campus has been initiated with MANUU taking control of the donated land and CPWD conducting an inspection for construction. Being a satellite centre, a big campus is required for conducting classes and other activities.
“The Lucknow centre of MANUU will continue. It will not be shifted. We can have another one at Sambhal, but not at the cost of Lucknow. I will personally meet Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav to request for land for the campus and other issues. I will also meet other government officials,” Sareshwala said on Monday.
The satellite centre was set up in Lucknow in 2008, but proved to be a non-starter as it runs from a rented building at Mahanagar extension area. MANUU officials claimed that they have tried but failed to get assurance for land from the state government. The Lucknow centre currently runs MA courses in English, Urdu, Persian. It has discontinued Arabic courses.
“There are problems, but these will be sorted. I will personally take up the matter. I will soon visit Lucknow. We will not close any centre due to lack of land,” Sareshwala said.
Maintaining that MANUU will be modernised, Sareshwala said talks are in final stages with three prominent industrial houses that will induct university students. “We are in the final stages of signing a MoU with two foreign universities for exchange programmes. We do not want a university that produces graduates who end up as unemployed youths, we will provide education which is job oriented,” he added.
Over allegations of supporting Modi and getting the Chancellor’s post in reward, Sareshwala said he is trying to change the scenario at MANUU. “I am meeting people and had invited several intellectuals for lunch in Hyderabad. I will do the same very soon in Lucknow. Results will be there for all to see… let people decide,” he added.
