THE ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh will lose if Assembly polls are held now, its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said Saturday. Addressing a party meeting called to discuss the strategy for the coming panchayat polls, Mulayam took to task Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav too.

“I have all the reports. There is no silver lining from anywhere. Officers don’t listen to you (Akhilesh), they are not in control. If polls are held today, we may not be able to win them,” Mulayam reportedly said during the meeting at party headquarters here.

Mulayam served the warning in clear words: “Bahut ghatak parinam aayenge. Sab bantadhar ho jayega (The results will be disastrous. Everything will be ruined)”.

While party did not issue press release on Mulayam’s comments, sources present in the meeting said Mulayam lost his cool when a district unit president tried to defend Akhilesh stating that media distorts things and government was functioning very well. “As if I do not know the reality…you are doing sycophancy…still there is time to wake up and manage the things,” he reportedly said.

Another party leader tried to complain about the SSP and other police officials in his district at which Akhilesh retorted that he was aware about the leader’s role in this episode. Sources said that Mulayam again lost cool and flayed Akhilesh for taking sides with officials instead of the party leader.

The SP chief took serious exception to party leaders indulging in groupism and politics up to the police station level instead of working for people and gave them a month’s time to mend their ways, the sources said. He warned that if there is no improvement, such leaders and workers could also be shown the door.
Mulayam said as the number of complainants were rising at the SP headquarters it was clear that party leaders and workers were not doing the needful at the district level.

Later, party’s state spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said besides discussing the strategy for the panchayat polls, the meeting decided that the process of constituting booth committees would be completed by August 31.
