Govt begins probe into ‘assault’ on jail inmate

The Bhadoi district administration today began an inquiry into alleged atrocities on a jail inmate inside the Gyanpur district jail.

The Bhadoi district administration today began an inquiry into alleged atrocities on a jail inmate inside the Gyanpur district jail.

The administration swung into action after seeing the picture of an undertrial suspended upside down from a rope and reportedly being manhandled inside the jail premises. The picture, which had been taken by a professional photographer from a high-rise building adjoining the jail, had appeared in a local newspaper.

Subdivisional magistrate Anajani Kumar Singh, who is conducting the inquiry, said “undertrial Suraj Dubey admitted that he was the person in the photograph and that he was thrashed by deputy jailor D K Singh inside the jail”.

“D K Singh has said in his statement that he was only scaring the inmate after he and two others tried to break prison walls. Singh denied any physical assault,” said SDM Singh.
