(PTI Photo/File)The Varanasi district court on Thursday accepted an application of the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid (AIM) management committee that sought time to prepare for the Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri complex case.
The plea was filed in the wake of the death of Abhay Nath Yadav, the lawyer who earlier led the argument in the case on behalf of the mosque management committee. Yadav passed away on July 31. The committee’s lawyers said that the case file was in Yadav’s chamber and it was not available to them so far.
District judge Ajaya Krishna Vishvesha, who accepted the application, listed the case for the next hearing on August 18.
The court is hearing the application challenging the maintainability of the plea seeking the right to worship at Maa Shringar Gauri Sthal on the outer wall of the complex. The mosque committee had a panel of six lawyers comprising Yadav who had presented the arguments in the court during hearing of the application. After he had concluded his arguments last month, the petitioner’s lawyer and the state government had submitted their replies.
As counter-response, the mosque committee had to present its arguments in the court on Thursday. “The one who will argue in the court needs to prepare for it. Since the file is in his chamber and it is not an appropriate time to disturb his family to get the documents, we submitted in the court seeking time,” said Merajuddin Siddiqui, one of the mosque committee lawyers.

Siddiqui said that it will be decided on August 18 only as who will argue on behalf of the mosque committee in future. Another lawyer for the mosque committee, Raees Ahmed, said that only one lawyer will lead the argument and present facts whereas other panel members will be present there to assist him.
