Kanpur dominates UPTU merit list

In the UP State Engineering Entrance Examination — the results of which were declared on Sunday — students from Kanpur dominated the merit list with 17 of them making their way in the top 100.

Varanasi came a distant second with 10 students from the holy city making their mark in the merit list of 10 different courses. While students from nation’s capital Delhi also made it to the merit list with nine students,state capital Lucknow managed to get only four students in the coveted list. Shubham Toshniwal of Agra topped in BTech while Anuj Singh of Shahajahanpur in the Bpharma. The list of toppers in different streams included students from Bijnore and moradabad,too.

short article insert On the dominance of Kanpur students in the merit list,UPTU authorities credited it to city’s fame of being a hub of coaching centers,where maximum students flock to prepare for entrance exams. “In the past also,Kanpur students have secured most positions in the merit list,” said UPTU Registrar U S Tomer.

A total of 3.56 lakh students had appeared for the entrance exams and their overall success rate was 82 per cent.

Around 2.73 lakh boys had appeared for the exams and their pass percentage was 83. Among the 83,138 girl candidates,77 per cent have qualified the exam.

Tomer said that in BTech,2.45 lakh candidates had appeared in entrance exam this year. Last year 1.60 lakh candidates had taken exam for admission in this course.

He said that admission counselling of qualified candidates would begin after July 10.

Only 4 courses miss UPTU’s excellence award
In the Academic Excellence Award 2008 announced by the UP Technical University (UPTU) on Sunday,the university did not find any college suitable for getting the award in four of its courses — MBA,B Pharma,BHMCT and MCA. Last year,not a single college was selected for the award.
This year,Ghazibad-based Ajay Kumar Garg Engineering College has been declared the top college in the BTech category and Krishna Institute of Engineering and Technology,also a Ghaziabad-based institute,the runner-up award. But the UPTU found no college suitable for third position in this category.
The university declared 11 colleges as Star Performers and Letters of Appreciation for eight others.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Prem Vrat said Governor T V Rajeswar will honour these colleges during a function at university’s Noida campus on June 13.
