Uttar Pradesh police have launched a fresh initiative for speedy trials of serious cases under which 20 cases will be identified in each district every month and their trials concluded within 30 days of filing of the chargesheet.

Cases that will fall under the purview of Operation Conviction include “serious cases” apart from those under the POCSO Act, murder, robbery, dacoity, illegal conversion and cow slaughter, officials said.

Speaking about Operation Conviction, UP Director General of Police (DGP) Vijaya Kumar said that under the state’s zero-tolerance policy towards crime, strict action has been taken in serious cases since 2017. “In each Commissionerate and district, 20 cases will be included and a speedy probe carried out. After the chargesheet is filed, within three days charges will be framed and within 30 days, trial will be concluded,” the DGP said.

“The responsibility to present the accused and the witnesses in courts will be of the police station in charge and of the commissionerate and district (police) chiefs. The district police chief will monitor these cases and hold meetings with the monitoring cells. They will try to get the cases tried in fast-track courts on a day-to-day basis in coordination with the district judge,” he added.

The DGP said direct coordination will be established between the forensics and police teams and a web portal is being developed to monitor the cases on a weekly basis under a senior officer.

A senior officer at the DGP headquarters said, “These 20 cases will be those in which the probe has been solid, scientific investigation carried out and the accused arrested. The cases will be identified by the district-level police teams. Then, it will be monitored by a portal on the state level.”

Speaking to The Indian Express on Tuesday, UP ADG (Prosecution) Dipesh Juneja said the operation will help the state become crime-free. “This operation will bring about long-lasting change in society and will help downtrodden sections. Our department (prosecution) will work hard on the initiative under the guidance of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and will achieve the targets set,” he said.
