The suspected Pakistani spy,Waqas Ahmed, who was arrested from Kanpur on Wednesday, had been to jail twice in connection to auto-theft cases in Mumbai and Kanpur in 2008. He was, however, never been identified as a Pakistani.
The state ATS,meanwhile, has obtained his police remand for five days.
The DIG,Rajiv Sabbarwal (ATS),said Ahmed went to jail in an auto-theft case in February,2008 and was later caught red-handed lifting a motorcycle from Kakadeo area in Kanpur.
Twenty-four-year-old Ahm-ed was allegedly recruited by Pakistans ISI to spy in India in 2004. During interrogation,he had revealed that against the usual directives to ISI spies to stay away from criminal activities,he was instructed to commit petty offences,go to jail and look for youths who could be lured to work for the ISI for easy money.
Ahmed was staying with a family in Kanpur and had also obtained a voter identity card. The head of the family a widow had adopted him. Ahmed had named her husband,Nafis Khan,as his father while applying for the card.
Ahmed was introduced to the family by the womans nephew,Babloo, who had come into contact with the Pakistani national in 2007. Ahmed had visited Kanpur thrice before he finally shifted his base to the city in August 2008. It appears that he earned the confidence of the family by supporting them financially. The ATS,at present,is looking for Babloo.
Though the voter identity card (NXB 0596288),which was issued on January 1 had Ahmeds photograph,it carried the name of one Ibrahim Khan. The address was of Nafis Khans residence 1067,Kalyanpur Khurd,Keshavpur.
Sabbarwal said a team has been dispatched to Delhi to verify the photograph on the passport (AD 0153781) issued from Lahore and recovered from Ahmed.
The accused had entered India through Wagah border where his credentials were verified first.
The DIG also said that Ahmed had admitted to receiving over Rs 1.5 lakh from the ISI this year. A similar amount had also been handed over to his Lahore-based family.
We are looking for the people who helped Waqas in Delhi,Surat,Mumbai,Shimla and Agra, he added.
