A team of Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) officials will visit Bijnor district after they received complaints about illegal dumping of effluents by a paper manufacturing unit —Mohit Paper Mill — in Choya River. DM Bijnor has written a letter to the UPPCB asking it to inspect the area and take action.

“We have written to the UPPCB on the basis of complaints we received from the locals. A paper mill situated near the river dumps its effluent without proper treatment. This situation had emerged earlier also and the industry was inspected by the Pollution Control Board and SDM. However, the unit was allowed to function after it fulfilled the norms,” said Bijnor DM A V Raj Murli.

Villages like Agri,Phachtra,Shahpur Lal,Sadiapur and Hadarpur are situated near the Choya river and the authorities fear that the effluent will contaminate groundwater in the area. “We have held discussions with the paper unit and they claim to be treating effluent properly before dumping in the river. We have referred the matter to the UPPCB,” said SDM Bijnor SB Singh
