Skills training scheme back as govt priority

The Samajwadi Party government has taken fresh initiatives to implement the Centre’s Skill Development Initiative Scheme (SDIS) properly in the state.

The SDIS,which targets those who have developed skills in an informal way but do not have certificates, was put on the backburner during the BSP government.

Sources in the government said deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia discussed issues relating to SDIS during his recent meeting with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in Delhi.

The state government will get trained about 14.02 lakh youths under SDIS in the year 2012-13. According to sources, the SP government has initiated a fresh process for selection of Vocational Training Providers (VTP). “This government cancelled about 1,500 VTPs that were selected during the BSP regime,” said a source in the DTE.

National Council of Vocational Training has already given final shape to over 1,500 Modular Employable Skills courses under SDIC. The courses include automotive repair, banking and accounting, beauty culture and hair dressing, carpet, chemical, electrical, electronics, fabrication, garment making, fashion designing, gem and jewellery, hospitality, information technology, medical and nursing, plastic processing and printing.

With SDIS,the idea is to create a system of certification that not only recognises skills but also provides education and training in a mode that suits economic compulsions of the people already working informally in such trades. The certification will help them get jobs in the organised sector. The assessment of skills in a field will be done by an assessing body appointed by the Directorate General,Employment and Training (GoI).
