SSB develops GPS-based system to monitor patrolling along Nepal border

The Sashastra Seema Bal has introduced a computer-based patrol management system that uses global positioning system devices to monitor movement of its personnel along the Nepal border.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has introduced a computer-based patrol management system that uses global positioning system (GPS) devices to monitor movement of its personnel along the Nepal border.

The system has become operational in all UP districts bordering Nepal, namely Maharajganj,Gorakhpur,Sidharth Nagar,Bahraich,Lakhimpur Kheri and Shrawasti.

Inspector General (IG) of Lucknow Frontier Headquarters,SSB,Anil Agrawal said that the company commanders supervising the border outposts, the control room at the battalion headquarters and officials at the frontier headquarters in Lucknow can monitor the movement of patrolling teams and each team member of a patrolling team round-the-clock on digital maps.

He said that the system was developed with each of the company commanders conducting a digital survey of their particular area with the help of a GPS device. The landmarks in the area were surveyed and routes on which the patrolling has to be done round-the-clock were formulated.

The route of each patrol team will be planned in advance and the details communicated to concerned SSB units. The assignment for each patrol team is given every evening for the next 24 hours and the details are communicated on wireless sets too,the IG added.

The patrol teams carry a GPS data logger that logs their positions. After they return to the unit, the data is transferred to the computer. Agrawal said the system provides several reports on digital maps, including the individual performance of each personnel in the patrol team.

The company commanders transfer the patrolling data through pen drives or wireless sets to the unit headquarters and the reports are uploaded to a server on SSB’s wide area network.
