Witnessing a growing number of incidents of honour killings,the Ghaziabad police have decided to track down couples who have eloped and gotten married to provide them safety from their families.
The police have prepared data of the cases in which couples have fled their villages fearing a threat to their lives. Senior police officers believe these couples lives could be at risk. I receive letters and complaints from couples who have had inter-caste marriages. Some of them have come to us for protection. To ensure that,we have prepared data this data, added Raghubir Lal,Senior Superintendent of Police,Ghaziabad .
From January 1 to mid-June this year,the police have had 56 cases registered by families of girls in various police stations of the district. The cases were registered against certain youths for enticing their girls to elope with them. The police have tracked down 26 of the 56 couples till now. Five girls even returned to their homes after a few months.
What happened to those girls is yet to be investigated. If any harm is done,the accused family members will be severely punished, said Lal.
Among the remaining 22 couples,three came to the SSPs office last week and submitted applications stating a threat from their families,the police said. We are trying to track them,as they deliberately did not mention their addresses on their applications, said the police chief.
The police are yet to trace 22 missing couples. The cases lodged at the various police stations are either complaints on missing girls,with a youth named as a suspect,or kidnapping cases. We believe these couples fled from their homes fearing opposition. We will track them down to ensure no honour killings take place, added a senior police officer.
