A day after the eateries and roadside carts, along the route of the Kanwar Yatra, were asked to display names of owners or proprietors to “avoid any confusion” among the yatris, Muzaffarnagar Police have issued a notice stating that compliance was voluntary and was not meant to create religious differences.
During the annual Shravan Kanwar Yatra, Kanwariyas in huge numbers travel across western Uttar Pradesh, from neighbouring states, after carrying water from Haridwar and cross Muzaffarnagar. During this devoutly religious month, many people especially Kanwar yatris abstain from certain food items in their diet.
According to the police, the names of certain shops on the Kanwar Yatra route created a state of confusion leading to a law and order situation in the past. To avoid repetition of such situations this year the owners and proprietors of the hotels, dhabas and other food sellers were requested to display the names on their own will.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ajay Kumar Sahni (Saharanpur Range) said that there have been controversies at the hotels and dhabas regarding the food items in the past. “There have also been instances where certain shops sold non-vegetarian food items or people from certain religious communities opened shops under the name of another community,” he said. The decision to display owners’ names was taken so that no such problems are created. “The owners and proprietors have willingly agreed to do this and the decision was taken keeping in mind the Kanwar Yatra route,” he said.
