With four months to go, govt claims less crimes in 2015

As against 2,986 murders reported in 2014, UP witnessed 2,683 murders this year.

Uttar Pradesh, according to Leader of Legislative Council Ahmed Hasan, has recorded a “decrease” in incidents of crime since last year.

The Samajwadi Party leader, who was Thursday countering the Opposition parties’ allegation of poor law and order in the state, presented these figures before the House: as against 2,986 murders reported in 2014, UP witnessed 2,683 murders this year.

The fact that the state was already close to the last year’s figure with still four months to go escaped Hasan’s calculations altogether.

While Chairman Ganesh Shankar Pandey rejected adjournment notices moved by Opposition members, he accepted an hour-long discussion on the law and order issue.

The Opposition leaders had cited recent incidents — death of a girl inside the police station in Sitapur, suicide by another girl in Hamirpur, and various other incidents — as ground for moving the notice.

Speaking on admissibility of the BSP’s notice, Leader of Opposition Naseemuddin Siddiqui said incidents of crime have increased in the state but the state government was silent.

Siddiqui asked the government to take cognizance of warning given by SP president Mulayam Singh Yadav who had recently said at a function that ministers will lose elections if they do not improve their working.

BSP leader Hriday Narain Dixit said that the police and the administration have become “politicised” and that the people were living in fear under the SP rule. Congress leader Naseeb Pathan said that the government has lost control on the law and order front.

In response to the notices, Hasan said that action has been taken in all the cases, adding that while the Inspector of the police station in Sitapur incident has been suspended, the station’s Circle Officer has been removed. He also said that that arrests have been made in Hamirpur incident.
