The BSNL employees union held a massive demonstration in front of the office of General Manger,Telecom,Ludhiana,on Friday in support of the strike called by seven all India unions against price rise, unemployment, disinvestment of public sector and anti-labour laws. Some of the unions that have called the strike include CITU,AITUC,INTUC,BMS and HMS.

Balbir Singh,Circle Secretary,BSNLEU,Punjab, and Balwinder Singh,District Secretary,Ludhiana unit, said the disinvestment policy of the Centre will ruin the future of nearly 2.48 lakh non-executive employees of BSNL.

They strongly opposed the recommendations of the Sam Pitroda panel to disinvest

30 per cent of BSNL and retrenchment of one lakh employees through voluntary retirement scheme. The panel, which was constituted on the intervention of the PM to check the declining market share and revenue, argued the measure suggested would improve the services and ensure financial viability of BSNL.

The union said the recommendation to retrench one lakh workers through voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) has no logic as there is a shortage of staff even now in certain areas.

“Nearly a lakh workers have already retired in the last 9 to 10 years after corporatisation. Any further reduction will be suicidal and will seriously affect BSNL’s development and expansion,” they said.
