Calling the shots

It was quite early in his childhood when Dr Dhruv Ghosh first performed on stage.

It was quite early in his childhood when Dr Dhruv Ghosh first performed on stage. He had enacted the role of one of the witches in the Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. But the first time was not as lucky for him as he had tripped over on the stage while performing his part. Rather than getting discouraged,it was perhaps a turning point which gradually infused in him a never-ending interest in dramatics that he has been successfully nurturing ever since.

A successful pediatric surgeon at CMCH,Dr Dhruv is also actively involved with the Music and Theatre Workshop of the college for which he recently directed a musical The Little Mermaid and raised money for the treatment of poor patients. He was one of the few persons at CMCH who revived the workshop of the college which was lying defunct for nearly a decade.

“I never wanted to be a doctor but I eventually became a paediatric surgeon,” he puts it humbly,as he listens to a call from his subordinate in the hospital. “I am on-call duty today,” he smiles.

“I was not very good in studies but excelled in extra-curricular activities. I did my schooling from St Joseph’s School in Dehradun and we were given freedom about extra-curricular activities there. So I was more into debates and elocution, which remains my first love, and dramatics,” he narrates his days of school which gave him a strong foundation in theatre. It was on the basis of his finesse in debates and dramatics that Dr Dhruv was selected as the Best Outgoing Student in his school.

“I wanted to give expression to my hobby and wanted to be an actor but there was some kind of family influence and I had a short height that I could not go ahead,” he says. “But I have been regularly participating in plays ever since my school days. The longest hiatus in between has been the days of post-graduation when there was no time for dramatics,” he adds.

“When I was pursuing my MBBS from CMCH,there was another reason for my association with the dramatics. The college had just set up the Music and Theatre Workshop and I became actively involved with it. We held various plays like The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde,Fiddler on the Roof and later Musicals like Joseph and His Technicolour Raincoat.”

Another thing that excites this 37-year-old is his love for history and knack for travelling. “I am currently pursuing a degree in history and have travelled to various places in south India, western UP,North-east apart from my home state Uttrakhand.”

Besides, what gives him a wide scope for imagining different characters is his voracious reading. “I cannot go to sleep before reading at least two pages of a book. Though I have been to numerous places in the country,I have never been to any other country. The books transport me to those places I have never been to and give a wider outlook and insight to imagine their cultures,” he explains how he imagines his characters.
