Cong to take on ruling alliance at House meet

The last time the House convened was to elect the Mayor in September.

After failing to build consensus for almost eleven months and facing an acute shortage of funds, the Ludhiana Municipal Council has decided to hold its first ever House meeting on March 12. The last time the House convened was to elect the Mayor in September.

The Opposition Congress is ,however,’disappointed’ and is all geared up to take on the SAD-BJP councillors for ‘not including even a single issue related to development of the city’ in the agenda of House meeting, which was recently sent to all councillors. The Congress has quite a task on its hands as it has only 19 representatives in the 75-member House.

The party, however, has decided to grill SAD-BJP councillors on the issue of implementation of property tax from April 1 and development charges, during the zero hour.

Hemraj Aggarwal, leader of opposition, talking to Newsline, said: “Property tax will be the major issue we will be discussing and interrogating the ruling alliance about. They cannot impose added burden on the common man without any reason. All issues related to development of the city and directly related to residents like roads, sewerage problem and others will be discussed, although this government has failed to mention even a single development issue in meeting agenda.”

Congress councillor,Gurpreet Gogi, added: “This is completely unacceptable that not even a single point related to development has been included in agenda. We are waiting for house meeting and then they will have to answer every single question of opposition. Why such a delay in house meeting and why no issue related to common people in agenda? Even the house tax committee and finance committee has not been formed till date.”

Councillors to get more grants

Councillors may soon get a grant of Rs 50 lakh for development of the interior areas of their seats and Rs 1 crore for the outer areas as discussed in a crucial meeting that took place at Mayor’s camp office on Friday evening. The MC councillors demanded the required sum on a yearly basis so that the developmental work is not stalled.
