The standoff between the district and sessions judge and Faridkot bar association was resolved on Wednesday after the intervention of Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The bar and the district and sessions judge had locked horns after some of the chambers of the lawyers situated in the court complex were demolished. The lawyers alleged that these 25 chambers were demolished without informing them and without allotting any new space to these lawyers. The demolition as per the lawyers was done on the orders of the district and sessions judge.

The court complex which is situated in a colonial Kothi is currently under renovation. “The judge Fatehdeep Singh had called me to his chamber and asked me to get the chambers demolished without allotting any new space,” Anoopinder Singh Sekhon, president of the bar, said.

Following this, the bar had called for an emergency meeting and it was decided that the bar will suspend all court work.

The situation was resolved today after the intervention of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge,Justice Ranjeet Singh, who is also the chairman of the Building Maintenance Committee.

“We have been assured that office space within the court complex will be provided to the lawyers whose chambers have been demolished and that in future before taking any such step. New chambers will be constructed before demolishing the old ones,” Sekhon said.
