Light rain causes waterlogging in city

Only 10 mm rainfall was enough to create waterlogging in many areas of the city,which exposed the loopholes of the Municipal Corporation (MC). Waterlogging could be seen for hours in the Domoriya Bridge area,clock tower,Karimpura,Saban Bazar,Talab Bazar,Janakpuri where problem is perennial. However,a civic body team had claimed that special efforts had been taken in these areas.

A damaged nallah near Minerva Market at the clock tower is being repaired in a hush hush manner by the MC team. The new water pipes were laid at midnight on Friday and would be working properly only after a few days.

Shopkeepers of the clock tower area,however,have stated that the nallah has still not been repaired in a proper manner. The inlet channel is still lying closed while the outlet has been repaired.

“As long as the inlet is not cleared,where will the water go? It will result in waterlogging of the old city areas,” said Mohinder Aggarwal,general secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Beopar Mandal. He stated that even due to the absence of rain drains,waterlogging could be seen on Domoriya Bridge. Additional Commissioner Kamlesh Bansal said,“We have installed 500 new rain drains in different parts of the city and it has cost us Rs 40 lakh. The water had moved out after about an hour and earlier it used to take longer. The condition is better this year.”

However,after the showers the temperature came down,giving respite to residents from power cuts in the city. But in villages Bhukri Kalan and Bhukri Khurd,heavy rainfall followed by strong winds resulted in the uprooting of 20 electricity poles on Friday evening. The roofs of six kuccha houses collapsed but no one was hurt. The power supply remained affected in these villages for the whole night.

DC Rahul Tiwari has asked all the departments to start a plantation drive because the monsoons have begun now. He asked them to present their demands by July 10 and assured that officers who work well would be rewarded. A total of 10 lakh plants will be planted during this monsoon,announced Tiwari.

Due to the overturning of a trolley on the newly inaugurated Gill flyover,traffic was disrupted for 12 hours. The incident at midnight on Friday.

The trolley overturned on one side of the flyover while a truck got stuck on the other side as it had developed some fault. This resulted in the choking of traffic from both sides.

Rainfall in the morning hours delayed the work of clearing the flyover and traffic movement could not be resumed till noon.
