Man tests positive for swine flu

People are advised to stay at least six feet away from people with flu-like symptoms.

A 45-year-old man from Barnala district was admitted to the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, on Tuesday where he tested positive for swine flu.

On Sunday, two patients were reported to have tested positive for the disease, taking the total to five in Ludhiana.

A 32-year-old woman from Moga was admitted to the SPS Apollo Hospital, while a 55-year-old man from Ludhiana was admitted to the CMCH. They tested positive on Sunday.

Two others from Jalandhar and Raikot are undergoing treatment at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. They are said to stable.

The health department issued an advisory on Tuesday saying there was no need to panic. Adequate arrangements have been made at city hospitals to deal with the situation. As many as 59 isolation beds and 37 ventilators have been kept aside to tackle swine flu cases.

The department also claimed that the testing for swine flu patients and tablets for treating patients are available free of cost and that there is no shortage of any logistical requirements.

Caused by the H1N1 virus, the symptoms of swine flu include cough, fever, sore throat, runny nose, body ache, headache, chills, fatigue, diarrhoea and vomiting. Advanced stage symptoms include breathlessness, chest pain, drowsiness, fall in blood pressure, sputum mixed with blood and discoloration of nails.

The Ludhiana Civil Surgeon has appealed to the people to take preventive steps and stay at least six feet away from people with flu-like symptoms.
