PAU to name road in honour of its Olympians

What is common between three Olympians Charanjeet Singh,Prithi Pal Singh and Ramdeep Grewal? All of them are products of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU).

To honour its three hockey Olympians,the university has decided to name one of its roads as ‘Olympians’.

The announcement regarding this was made by PAU V-C Dr Manjit Singh Kang at the innauguration of the annual athelic meet held in the first week of this month. The proposal for the same has now been moved. The road from the university library to the gymnasium will be named as the Olympian Marg.

“It is rare to have three Olympians from the same institute. This gesture will provide the much needed motivation to the budding sportspersons,” said Kang.

In his recent visit to the PAU,eminent plant breeder Dr Gurdev Singh Khush had said that his classmate and hockey Olympian Prithi Pal Singh was a dedicated sportsperson whose mission was to excel. Prithi was a part of the Olympics held in Mexico in 1968. Charanjit had participated in Tokyo Olympics in 1964 and Ramandeep in Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Apart from these three,the university has also produced member of the World Cup 1975 winning team,Rajwinder Singh,junior Hocket player Yadwinder Singh and Lata Mahajan,member of the women hockey team.

Ramandeep Singh,who is at present coaching the Indian hocket team for the World Cup,is also the sports director of the university. “This is a great honour for us. It always feels good when your hardwork and achievements are recognised. This will also motivate the sportsperson of the next genereation.”

“The university has some good players. I have seen a couple of boys who are doing very well. I hope they get a chance to play at the national and international level. Two players from the PAU have attended the under-21 and under-18 national camp,” he added.
